Speaking the World: A Polyglot's Love for Language
The languages represent interesting lens that reflect a lot
about other of different cultures, and some of their recollections. I have been
fascinated by their beauty and complexity since my childhood. As a child raised
in what one can only describe as Bengali soundscape, the music of my mother
tongue was all around me. But the real kindred spirit inside me was found in
cartoons- Hindi and English. Even though my family spoke to each other in
Bengali, watching animated characters go on their adventures introduced me to
this colorful world of narrative and comedy. And the funny thing was, that such
freaky colloquies and soundful songs in these languages made me interested in
all those shades of their meaning. On the contrary, for me, I believe that
inner conflict built my passion to seek out just how those words could bring
languages together in ways spoken by few before.
When I was older, my love of language grew even deeper; this
time Arabic, and for religious reasons. The script of Arabic and how they came
to be was what captivated me. From there I ventured online, watching YouTube
videos and language learning websites as well as using apps with structured
lessons. The rhythmic beat of the language, paired with just how desperately I
needed it in my own spiritual journey was enough to move me past everything. I
learned the fundamentals of my faith which drew me to listening to the
recitation of the Quran and sermons in Arabic which enhanced my prayer life and
further embedded myself with my faith. This experience deepened my awareness of
the subject, but also left me with a feeling of peace and happiness that was
unknown to everyone.
My love for languages and TV shows took a turn I did not expect and I became addicted to the series La Casa de Papel. While the dynamic storytelling and searing characters kept things interesting, it was the Spaniards speaking uncut Spanish that totally swept me off my feet. My ears were charmed by the sound of the language, leading me to learn not only Spanish but also Portuguese, Italian and French. Every new language is its own universe and opens up dimensions of culture, music, and literature that resonate with rhythms and forms that reveal the wider networks these languages hold.
Then, as time went on and my grasp of the language improved, I had the privilege to assist other people by becoming an interpreter. My friends or even acquaintances would often reach out to me if they needed help in between communications such as translating documents, interpreting conversations or even helping with community events. I enjoyed helping others to bridge the gap between one human and another, experience by experience, furthering my belief in this grand connection language can make. To be able to help those with whom I cannot communicate directly was deeply fulfilling, and it only drove me more in my pursuit for learning the incredible blessing of language and communication.
I grew up bilingual and became proficient in more than a few
languages, allowing me the ability to give back by translating and interpreting
for others. Over time, friends and friendships would often turn to me for help
as a communication bridge, whether that was for translating documents or
interpreting in conversations from Spanish to English, even Community events I
helped in. I enjoyed bridging the gap between two different groups and every
time, I was ever so much convinced of language being that one thread which
connects us all together. I loved that my language skills could enable me to
directly help people who were struggling with language barriers, adding even
more motivation for wanting to study languages and communications.
It is a journey that has molded who I am and
helped my connect with other humans at a deeper level. Each helps me find more
sense with Arabic in the spiritual sphere or to let slush with Spanish; now the
whole world of Romance languages is sold me out. Working as an Interpreter has
helped me fill gaps in information and help people to better understand one
another. My passion for languages is really about creating meaningful
connections that will advance humanity as a whole, not just about acquiring new
words.
